Chapter Twelve

A NEW BEGINNING

As Mia began her day at work, she got a call from Sophie. “Happy Monday, bitch. I sent my notice over to Mr. Shaw and Thomas.” Sophie read the notice to Mia.

“This makes me sad, Sophie. I just hate that you’re leaving, though I think time and distance will put Thomas out of your head. Maybe you will find a single man that really enjoys peach pie!” They giggled like teen girls. Sophie was embarrassed by her behavior.

Mia was saddened by the realization that Sophie was really leaving. She wasn’t so sure Thomas was worth picking up and moving away. Mia wanted Sophie to work at another bank but not necessarily out of town. Mia liked having her friend close enough to meet for lunch and chat with her. She would miss Sophie. Sophie felt like a little sister in many ways. Sophie felt a lot like a little sister Mia had once upon a time.

Mia was supposed to be working, but she read through the journals of my granny. She read page after page when her friend, Trina, entered her office. Trina stood at the entry of the door with a big smile on her face. She leaned onto the door frame.

“That bitch got sentenced to thirteen months yesterday. I wanted her to get longer, but I’m happy she will be locked up and have a record now. Thirteen months isn’t enough, but I am relieved she will serve time.” Mia was happy that an abuser was put away. They hugged in celebration. Trina was curious about how Mia knew, and Mia tried to explain it again. Now that time had passed, Trina began being curious about how Mia could know things about Mabel.

“It sounds odd, but it was just a fluke, I guess. I feel better now, no more visions or feelings anymore. I experienced it for a short while, but it disappeared as quickly as it happened,” Mia tried to explain to Trina but worried about the skepticism.

“Mia, are you psychic or...?” Trina was curious.

Mia nodded slowly, thinking about how she should answer. “I do believe in that stuff. I don’t know how someone can believe in miracles and God but then don’t believe in our own abilities. My granny and little sister had strange connections and abilities, but I never had those gifts.”

Trina confessed she, too, believed in things bigger than what we can know and explain. They left the subject at that and got on with the day.

A few hours later, Mia wrapped up her workday. She was going to finish the journal since she encountered too many interruptions at work. She didn’t have much down time while working like she sometimes would get to enjoy. My mom called Mia, just chatting with her, and asked if she was still feeling better, which, thankfully, Mia was finally back to feeling like her old self again. It was a relief to Mia to be back to her familiar self.

Mia and my mom spoke on the phone a bit before our mother inquired about the journals Mia was supposed to read.
